Google’s new metrics system changes the landscape for marketers in 2021 with the implementation of the new ranking signal, Core Web Vitals.
According to Google, “Core Web Vitals are a set of real-world, user-centered metrics that quantify key aspects of the user experience. Optimizing for these factors makes the web more delightful for users across all web browsers and surfaces, and helps sites evolve towards user expectations on mobile. We believe this will contribute to business success on the web as users grow more engaged and can transact with less friction.”
Google understands that even if a site has great content, visitors may still decide to look elsewhere for answers to their queries if it doesn’t deliver a positive user experience. Accordingly, Google has focused on the following metrics to help measure user experience:
- Largest Contentful Paint (LCP)
- First Input Delay (FID)
- Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS)
Largest Contentful Paint
In the past, it has been difficult to measure the speed with which content loads on a webpage and becomes visible to users (LCP). An achievable goal is for LCP to occur within the first 2.5 seconds of a loading page. You can utilize Google PageSpeed Insights to determine your LCP score and receive specific recommendations to improve it.
First Input Delay
FID is the time lapse between the action and the processing of that action, such as how much time elapses between the click of a link and the on-screen response. A delay of less than 100 milliseconds ensures a quality site experience that could yield a more loyal user. You can utilize Google PageSpeed Insights to determine your FID score and receive specific recommendations to improve it.
Cumulative Layout Shift
CLS measures visual stability, including movement on a page. The more often content shifts suddenly due to desynchronized loading, the less enjoyable a web session becomes. A score of less than 0.1 is ideal for a good user experience. You can utilize Google PageSpeed Insights to determine your CLS score and receive specific recommendations to improve it.
